Cannes 2011 review: Sleeping Beauty
Julia Leigh’s film adaptation of his novel take on a student prostitution is an elegant, if sometimes absurd debut
“Your vagina is penetrated. Your vagina is a temple.” With these words, Sleeping Beauty, the ground rules established and paves the way for a bizarre sexual nightmare Upcoming Movies. The film is set in Australia, but designed in a high, modern European style: It ‘s always a surprise to realize that dialogue is in English and not French or Austrian German accent.
And ‘technically elegant, with vehemence and control, even if often absurd, with the exclusive high-end prostitution imagined and the art-porn clichés of the secret of sex appeal in large blocks: shades of Eyes Wide Shut.
Author-turned-director Julia Leigh’s debut is certainly a safe, which apparently has nothing to do with Jane Campion, the “present” has made this film in any capacity for executive mentoring. Instead, Leigh wants Buñuel occult ritual and formal rigor Haneke: rigorously framed and composed shots.
Emily Browning is a fierce and powerful performance, should be in the running for best actress prize, the festival is set, is Lucy, a student who needs part-time jobs to pay tuition fees. This includes medical experiments – a process almost unwatchable and penetrating criticism where it is inserted a tube in their esophagus – and occasional prostitution. From there, Lucy is included in a niche of the sex industry: older men in tuxedos and dinner paid into beautiful young women waiting for them, almost naked Upcoming Movies. Their success leads to a lucrative “Sleeping Beauty” concert. She was drugged and put these aging, failure enjoyment people can do what he wants his body naked, except for the penetration. But Lucy is obsessed with knowing what you are doing for her.
The film is the emotional sincerity is unfortunate Lucy back in history: not only a need of money that they did this, but a kind of trauma and self-hatred. Apparently she had a painful and complicated relationship with a drug called agoraphobic man Bird (Ewen Leslie), was and is clearly in love with her and her many visits to their loving friendship is complicated by guilt for not feeling the unspoken the same way or you want to sleep with him.
All this suggests Browning in his sulky pout, repressed tears, she angrily vacuum is turned on, especially when talking on the phone the mother alcoholic. All this leads to a bizarre situation is in a drugged stupor for men who want to enjoy a necrophiliac rape fantasy Upcoming Movies. The original fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty to prick her finger on a spinning wheel collapsed, is a picture of a moment in combination with women’s work and dared torpid acquiescence. Lucy is certainly here the work of women, but what does it do? Will she wake up, what happened?
The stomach turning “sex” scenes show brutally bad as the aging of the male body, and the penalties are not even here miserably, trying to avoid penetration. For some, the situation may call Almodovar’s Talk to Her, or perhaps the resolution of Dennis Potter’s Brimstone and spirit from molasses. But there is no labor force and originality in Leigh.Sleeping Beauty is an impressive display technical, if not more than the sum of its parts.
